Yesterday I was the victim of catalyst theft - my Honda CR-V was parked on the road outside my house and scum took the cat using a battery powered reciprocating saw. 30 seconds work for him, and maybe £50 from a dodgy scrapyard, but for me the expense of a new cat, centre exhaust section, 2 lambda sensors and the fucking inconvenience of being my wife’s chauffeur for a few days while the stuff arrives and I can fit it.
My issue is why are the old bill doing seemingly fuck all about this? Last week these scum targeted the local Morrisons and Waitrose car parks and got loads - they seem to be untouchable, travelling on false plates, guarding the bastard underneath sawing it off with baseball bats etc - about time the police set up some bait cars and locked these fuckers up
Rant over, just so pissed off

FFS so sorry to hear of this Russ - gutted for you. When this "trend" first started some years ago a hotel car park near me must have had a "nick to order" it was so rife, bastards.... bring back good old 5* gas and normal engines would be a start.....

I blame the Germans. Back in the 80s when it was clear that the EU was going to start imposing emissions limits Rover and others especially the Japanese were making great progress on lean burn engines, in fact Rover had the K series able to hit the proposed targets without a catalyst. Mercedes and BMW however loved to keep making big dirty engines that couldn’t hit a barn door emissions target without a cat and allegedly brought pressure on the EU to enforce catalysts on all cars destined for EU market, as they had to do it for US sales - dumb the market to their level. Even if an EU market engine could hit the targets without a catalyst they were legislated to have one. This of course set the Germans on a course of bigger and more powerful, and often less fuel efficient engines because they could convert and mask the shit coming out the pipes
