I hear that VR1 has changed its formulation and no longer quote a ZDDP value. What's your expert opinion? Are there better oils available now?

Yep it seems when they changed from a black can to a grey one they are cagey about their ZZDP content. When I drive back to the UK in the new year I'm buying up Duckhams classic. Always liked it 👍 and yes perhaps the colour had something to do with it 😬

No expert opinion as that is meaningless ..... But the actual FACT is that yes it has changed and the formulation available in Europe (includes the UK) is different from that available in the US. The US formulation declares the levels of ZDDP, the EU one fudges the issue. It changed a couple of years ago. There are plenty of good alternatives around that publish full technical data sheets and specify the actual levels contained in their oil. Many are actually cheaper than VR1 used to be when it was readily available through Eurocarparts. Classic Oils Heritage 20W/50 at £20 for 5 litres is one. There are others from Millers, Duckhams, Penrite, Morris Oils, Rye Oils etc. If you are worried about high temperatures etc. Then you could consider one of the fully synthetic oils with ZDDP such as Amsoil Z-Rod 20W50, should hold up better (in theory)to a mineral oil. Not a recommendation but a possible option. Me I stick with Castrol GTX from the 1970's with a dash of RedX in the tank 'cos that is wot we used then when I was apprenticing JP

I used to use GTX 20\50 but I was told by the importer that the ZZDP had been dropped from it thats when I changed to VR1. I don't know if that's just Castrol sold in Spain it doesn't say anything about ZZDP on the can.

Interesting to see Fuzz seems to have had a hand in Heritage make up - he's a fountain of knowledge

I have found of late that VR1, since the silver grey packaging was released hasn’t been so good, certainly on my high mileage Stag lump with only adequate rather than good oil pressure, so have slipped the noose and gone over to Penrite 20/60 which seems to have better hot performance - certainly 5 psi + over VR1 when hot, and anything like that is a win
