As it seems I might have some spare time on my hands I thinking about fitting some electric mirrors to the stag. I’m sure someone has mention its been done before. I’ve been looking on eBay for secondhand electric mirrors, which there is literally thousands. One that look like there may fit, and not look completely out of place, of those from Vauxhall Corsa.
My Stag has a roll cage and racing harnesses, so once you’ve clicked yourself in and then realise he can’t see out the mirrors it’s a right pain in the arse to get out the car to adjust them. Yesterday was one of the first days I’ve took the stag out since May last year. While I was out stopped at some lights, some clumsy fat fool managed to wobble off the pavement and just brush by my car knocking the mirror. So for the journey home I had a good view of my roof. I just thought electric mirrors is what I need, either that or a big cattle prod.

I have toyed with this idea but could not find a suitable mirror as they all seemed too big. I fitted convex lenses which give a reasonable view, doesn’t cater for being knocked though.

I think I’ve found some that possibly would work, and would not look out of place. Even though they are used spares are still very expensive, about £120, just for both mirrors. The controllers again for about £50. I’m not too sure, 100% sure, if they will fit correctly. Their old UK car parts that are found on jags, Rolls Royces, Bentleys and Daimlers. As you can imagine soon as you put Rolls-Royce on the spares the price goes up.
I didn’t wanna waste around £170 plus delivery, I managed to find some identical wing mirrors but with manual adjusters. That cost a fraction of the price, so if they don’t work it’s not a great loss. However if they do work it means that it might be worth waiting for the Rolls-Royce electric ones to appear a bit lower price.

There in the post at the moment so realistically I’ve no idea what sort of size they are. I’ve got the idea from the scimitar website as a few their members have fitted the electric ones to their cars. This is what they look like fitted to a senator scimitar which is possibly a similar sort of size to the stag, maybe. But it gives you some idea of the size and what that might look like, but there shiny chrome sought of affair.

I hope they are bigger than the ones I’ve got at the moment, they’re not standard fitment, as my originals got broken and dented while I was building the car. Although The ones I’ve got on are similar sort of size to the standard ones. When I was looking to replace my original ones I think I went through about five different sets of mirrors until I found ones that were the right sort of size and look right in the car.
I should’ve kept the original ones and just replace the mirrors and knocked out the dents but I’m sure they went in a box of a load of other spares that were sold/swapped or misplaced.

Well, the new mirrors turned up today. There in great condition, considering from yeah early 80s. They are slightly, considerably, bigger than the standard stag mirrors. Adjusters work well, so when they get them fitted they should allow me to adjust them while inside the car. Although they are bigger I don’t think they look out of place, or hopefully won’t look out of place, especially after I’ve drilled some 15mm holes in the door to fit the controls through. But just with a trial fit, they are bigger so you can see a lot more. so hopefully when reversing in out my drive, which is very awkward to do, it will make things a lot easier.
