I’m not really in the process of building a garage more like making a something out of what I’ve got. There’s room to get a car, a bit of storage for those weird and wonderful garden things, that do things like cut that green stuff. But not enough room to fit the daily driver, the bike and obviously the stag.
so I couple years ago I started to dig some foundations, did some concreting, put some pillars in to support the new roof, but with time money and everything else, I never went any further. Now I have a few weeks where I’m not working, I decided to finish the project, build some sort of garage that can take the cars and the bike.
The thing is my Dad, in his garage, use to have a pit, it was quite useful for him, I never used it as I was a bikes when I lived at home. Now I’ve seen a few things on the Internet of how big, how wide, how deep to make a pit, but not too sure what is the recommended dimensions to have.
So if anybody has got a useful pit in the garage, for maintaining their cars, whether it’s a stag or anything else. I would be interested to know the dimensions that work. This is one of those times where I can make it work and only wanna do it once, as it means digging up part of the floor that been there for many years . I’m sure that one of my neighbours or people in the small village, very small village, has got a small digger.

Thanks for that but no doubt it will cost a small fortune. When a garage door company has just come round and quoted me £4500 for a garage door, admittedly is roller electric, the bloke said it is fully insulated, like that something that will make a difference. I won’t be able to afford to buy a pit when I can’t afford to buy the garage door that price.
At the moment I’m trying to learn how to build a cob stone wall but it has to have rendering to make it strong enough to support the roof. It’s not as easy as I remember it, I also forgot how wide you have to make it so looks good on both sides. He seems like he’s gonna take up the whole garage just with a wall.
It be good to have a pit premade just drop-in, but I think a go down the road of disc cutting out an oblong shape getting some angline and welding it up.. And then getting a load of concrete to stop the walls caving in.

I put a pit in my garage about 20 years ago; I was skimming the floor so was able to put a conduit in for lighting. Don't seem to be able to post a photo of the dimensions so will try and explain. Pit itself is 3.3m long by 1.1m wide. the middle is 1.15m deep. There is a lip 7.5cm deep by 10cm long each side to allow for wooden planks 7.5cm deep by 15cm wide and 1.1m long to rest on it. These cover the pit to prevent SWMBO falling down it. This leaves 90cm wide opening. 80cm down from the floor there is a shelf 30cm wide on each side to sit on leaving 30cm for legs. The bottom of the pit is 35cm below the shelf. The opening was lined with polythene to stop damp/water ingress and the verticals were breeze block; horizontals concrete or mortar. Hope this helps. If you want a photo, you could send me a pm on the "other" forum, my id is mopoole Regards Maurice

You could try http:// www.rollerdor.net a mate had one fitted .electric about 6m x 2m for around £1300 all in Thanks, I tried that company but they would only do up to 4.8 m, they said they could go to 5 m but that wouldn’t be covered under the guarantee. As it was too wide. I do need 5 1/2 m, I found a company that will Supply them but not fit them that’s about £2600, that would also have what they call a wicket or a pedestrian access door. That way you don’t have to roll at the door every time you wanna go in and out the garage or wanna take the dogs into the garden.
I’ll try that company again but I think a sectional door would be better but if they can do it for that price it would be great.

That’s another company to try, I did try some industrial companies but they said that it had to be a commercial property. So they wouldn’t even come out to do a survey. One company did say that their doors would suit my application, but they’re no good for residential properties as they are too loud,. Operating your door to get either in or out During the quiet hours would not be that quiet. They said their doors are very similar to the tanks in saving private Ryan, very noisy.
Had a couple of people come out today to give me quotes for the doors. One of them I knew from years ago, sort of one of my kids mates dads. He said he wouldn’t fit one, as will be a waste of my money and his time. And I need really to take the roof off of the garage, install RSJ’s all the way along, so they could take the weight of a decent garage door.
That ain’t gonna happen any time soon, yeah brilliant idea, something I did look into putting steel girders across, the lead time and all that, it this isn’t a viable solution. So I might have to borrow some metal from work and put a steel box section across and remove all the joist to allow the garage door and all its Gubbins to fit in, and also offer a bit more strength.
And here’s me thinking it would be mega easy to get someone out to fit the garage door and all be done and dusted within a few days. Couldn’t be much more wrong.

So you store your unfortunate victims in there? Do you have any water table issues? Did you tank it - after all you would not want water and electricity to mix would you

It’s how I make my living. The damp helps the electrodes conduct and saves on copaslip, although I do have to use the air powered nail gun rather than electric
